When we started Buffalo Chow two years ago, we had a simple goal: improve the quality of food journalism in Western New York. And we tackled this goal with aplomb, spotlighting hundreds of restaurants with detailed, objective reviews and photographs that showed - in many cases for the first time - what meals actually look like at this area's best places, low-end and high-end alike. Then we went further, reporting on both local food festivals and noteworthy restaurants outside of Buffalo, providing the sort of big picture coverage that enabled us (and hopefully you) to enjoy a better-informed perspective on the foods we all love here. It's been a fun ride. But today, while offering sincere thanks to our readers and friends, we're pressing pause on Buffalo Chow, and since you might have questions, we wanted to offer a few details about our decision.
Why Stop Now? Buffalo Chow has been an extended side project for us - the product of thousands of hours of time on top of our "real" jobs and responsibilities as parents. And it keeps growing, with no signs of stopping. We've reached over 116,000 unique visitors in the past year, and the requests keep on coming in - some readers have asked us to expand our coverage outside of this immediate geographic area - "drive an hour and check out this barbecue joint!" or "where would you recommend we eat in Canada?" As much as we appreciate the requests and enjoy exploring, we're already spending too much time - too much of our very limited free time - at places that are way off the beaten path for most of our readers. And us.
What's Next? Anything could happen. For the time being, our plan is to keep the Buffalo Chow site operational, complete with its hundreds of reviews and thousands of photographs.
Anything Else? We'd like to say a special thanks to WNYmedia.net, a great local site devoted to reporting and editorializing on local events; we were glad to be part of such a nice network. Marc, Alan, and Chris, we appreciate what you do for Western New York, and what you did with us. Thank you. And thank you to our readers, our friends, and our family for your support as we've built Buffalo Chow one meal at a time. We couldn't have finished all those desserts without your help.
Until next we meet, bon appetit!

Wow, this is sad news, but I certainly understand. Thanks for all the valuable information and insights you have provided, and I am happy to hear the site will still be available as my husband and I continue to look for (more) great food in Buffalo!

Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into Buffalo Chow. For the rare non-native Buffalonian, it is greatly appreciated.

I'm going to miss this place (er, website?) -- many thanks for being a source of entertainment and never leading me astray on where to eat.

Just have Janice Okun take over. She might not know what a "HTML tag" is, but you can surely bet she makes restaurant owners wince. Cheers BC!
(I gave you a plug on my blog btw)

And for the record, this is a great website. I love Buffalo and its food. And now I love hawg wings.
On a last note, I just went back to read the Nelson Starr/AB story and I just think the whole thing was a disaster. It probably would have been better if AB never came to Buffalo. There's obviously conflicting views about what was shown and would should have been shown.
Buffalo is a culture so far behind big-city technology. I see this website as a free, open source of information for the public. I see this website as a trend-setter. Other than Bill Rapaport's guide (no pictures, no un-biased description) and Gusto reviews (which you have to pay to see back-logs), there's nothing else out there to highlight the mecca of WNY cuisine.

As a librarian, I have to comment on Andrew Z's comment. Yes, if you go through the Buffalo News website you have to pay for older articles. But you can get them online for FREE through the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library's website.
Just go here: http://www.buffalolib.org/db/index.asp . Then login with your library card number, and select "Buffalo News" from the list of databases. It has articles going back to 1989.

Oh, I am disappointed, but I know you have thought long and hard before making this decision. Just Saturday, I hopped on BC to see what apps to order at Faletta's and ended up getting the fried stuffed peppers you recommended. We all loved them too. So will the website still exist for future reference, but you wont be adding to it? Or will it be gone? Amazing job, as someone said, a trend setter!

Thank you very much for all your hard work, I appreciate your thoughtful, objective reviews. I love your enthusiasm and how you really tried to let your readers know how much better some parts of the local food scene could be, and how good we have it in other aspects. You are the only local critics I know of who rate restaurants based on more than one visit. You'll be sorely missed.

I do so hope that you will add to the web site every now and again, as you try a new eatery. This has been a wonderful thing to watch evolve, and I for one am very sad to see it end. Your total honesty and great taste have been very much appreciated. My sister, who doesn't eat out much, loved to vicariously experience the 'ups and downs' of local (and not so local) culinary spots.
Thanks for the memories. Best of luck to you in whatever you do next.

I just discovered Buffalo Chow for the first time today, via Buffalo Rising. Sad that the reviews are ending, but I'm very much looking forward to scouring this site for all your great reviews and photos.
I was born and raised in Buffalo and now live in Washington, DC. After several years away from home, I fully realize--nearly every day in DC-- that Buffalo does not lack for great food. It is one of my favorite things to spotlight for visitors when I return home, and Buffalo Chow will be a great resource to help me!
Hope you return to reviews after a well deserved break.

Thank you all for your kind comments. We have made every effort to be honest and objective in all of our reviews, and to make this site a useful, educational place for Western New Yorkers (and those from outside WNY) to visit. It's great to know that you've enjoyed it.
We're in the process of mapping out the future of the site - something we've been thinking about a lot over the past six months but haven't reached resolution on quite yet. As mentioned above, anything could happen...

Having raised seven kids of my own I can sure sympathize with time constraints. But I still want you to drive an hour away and come to my bbq joint ! And bring those kids ! We have soda straws that change color and a candy jar for those that eat all their bbq dinners. lol......
Best of luck in raising the brood, it was nice while it lasted, I just wish I had discovered it sooner.

As a long-time reader, (and long-time "disagree-er" with many of your reviews and ratings,) I would like to wish you the best in the future.
While I often shook my head at the severity of some of your criticism, and often raised my eyebrows at some of the positive reviews given to establishments I hated, BuffaloChow was a welcome addition to the local food scene.
You folks will be missed for your gung-ho enthusiasm and sheer quantity of reporting.

Our goal was (and remains) to always be fair to the places we were visiting, whether they were expensive and supposedly charging a premium for higher quality, or inexpensive and shaving dollars off by doing away with some of the niceties. Opinions on flavors and value for dollar vary, of course, from person to person, but we were thrilled by the huge number of comments we've received over the years from people who felt they were guided correctly to great places by the site, and steered away from others. Thanks for reading.

Thanks so much for all of the time and effort you have invested in this wonderful site. We're sorry to see you go. You have been our go-to resource for unbiased reviews and honest opinions on WNY food. I'm sure we'll continue to visit the archives!
