Looking for something interesting to do (and eat) this weekend? We have a couple of options to offer you today. Every year, the New York State Maple Producers Association holds a Maple Weekend to celebrate the start of the maple syrup and maple sugar harvest. This year's festivities actually take place over two weekends, starting on March 20-21, and continuing on March 27-28, 2010. What should you expect? Unlike the other option discussed below, the Maple Weekend doesn't take place at a single location with an admission charge. Instead, you can visit one or more maple producers located on country roads 20 miles outside of Buffalo - typically small family farms offering in-person looks at maple tree taps and syrup production, plus mini-stores set up to sell all sorts of different maple products. The farms typically open around 10am and close before dinner time. If you're looking for a hot meal, wait until the morning of Sunday, March 21, when maple pancake breakfasts are being held at four fire halls and American Legion Posts across Erie and Niagara Counties - some all-you-can-eat. The Maple Weekend breakfast locations and hours are here.

Fans of pizza have another option this weekend. Last year, we attended the Buffalo Pizza-Fest, a local pizza convention of sorts with 15 different pizzerias offering slices - after an $8 admission fee at the door. For whatever reason, this year's event has been renamed to the Buffalo Pizza-Bash, but it's also been expanded: the Pizza-Bash now features 25 different pizzerias at Samuel's Grande Manor in Williamsville, and will run from 11am-9pm Saturday March 20, and 11am-6pm on Sunday March 21. Don't expect gourmet dining here since everything's likely to be reheated on the spot, but there are plenty of different pizzas to try, and occasional surprises amongst the offerings.
